L-ACOUSTICS KIVA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

December 2007

PLUS 4 AUDIO used their new L-ACOUSTICS KIVA system for the main front of house arrays at the recent National Television Awards ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall. Broadcast live on National TV the annual event commemorated the most prestigious annual awards for both the stars and programmes alike.

PLUS 4 used a total of 32 KIVA split into 2 arrays of 16 cabinets each while 24 dV-DOSC in 2 arrays of 12 took care of the left and right outfills. A further 4 SB118 subs were utilised for low end reinforcement All the amplification was derived from a mixture of the new L-ACOUSTICS LA4 and LA8 Controllers.

The decision to use the ultra compact KIVA was taken by Stew Chaney the MD of PLUS 4 who explains his design concept:

“Site lines were very tight on this show so we needed the smallest possible system to cover the Albert Hal. I used SOUNDVISION to appraise the system coverage and was really surprised to find that the SPL and coverage figures looked exceptionally good with the KIVA system. When it came to the show the benefits were really apparent as we wanted to put as little weight as possible in the air (each array was only 220kg) fly the system well out of sight (we trimmed the bumpers at 18m) and have enough vertical coverage for the audience geometry (100 degrees). We already knew how good the system was in smaller venues but to cover the Albert Hall with two tiny arrays was unbelievable”.

Paul Nicholson from L-ACOUSTICS adds:

The KIVA system has proved to be a great success for L-ACOUSTICS on a world wide scale, and has filled a crucial gap in our armoury. With 8 systems already sold in the UK since the official launch just 4 months ago KIVA looks likely to be a big hit for us. Companies such a PLUS4 will certainly benefit from the multi faceted appeal of the system which includes:

  • Stunning size and weight ratios
  • True WST® performance in common with V-DOSC®, dV-DOSC, KUDO™, and ARCS
  • Integrated “invisible” rigging system
  • Perfect audio coupling with the LA4 Controller
  • Complimentary KILO bass extension
  • Low cost system package

Designed for medium format music and speech reinforcement the NTA awards certainly showed what KIVA can do in a large and difficult acoustic environment by providing a high level of accuracy throughout the audience ”.

With a circuit of over 1.2km long and an estimated crowd of 60 000 fans, it was the job of SOUND HARMONICS - L-ACOUSTICS Distributor in South Africa - Joseph Mandy & Richard Smith to design a sound system capable of even coverage over the entire course, with no space to fly any clusters and enough power to compete with the cars.

Keeping the theme French, the distributed system was L-ACOUTICS and comprised of 24 KUDO, 24 dV-DOSC, 8 KIVA and 4 KILO. Each of the 8 KUDO stacks consisted of 3 enclosures and were used to cover West Street and the main VIP grand-stands on the top of Fredman Drive. The dV-DOSC was used in clusters of six enclosures and covered Fredman Drive, while two clusters of 4 KIVA and 2 KILO each, covered the main control area, consisting of the main turning circle in the course, powered by 2 amplified controllers LA4.

On the newly launched KIVA System, Richard Smith comments: “We used the KIVA system mainly for voice, but also recorded music.  It sounded wonderful and had enough sound pressure to pull off the job.  It was only the first or second job that they did and everybody was impressed”.

BEJART BALLET WITH KIVA SYSTEM
October 2007

International Izmir Festival 21st edition was held this summer at the Izmir Open Air Theatre from June 10th to July 14th, 2007.

The renowned Turkey event hosted a Bejart Ballet and the occasion marked the first appearance of the L-ACOUSTICS Utra-compact KIVA Line Source Array WST® (Wavefront Sculpture Technology) speaker system.

Emre Defne, Technical Director, ELIT - L-ACOUSTICS Distributor in Turkey - comments: "the electro-acoustic simulations we ran with the 3Dmodeling SOUNDVISION software demonstrated that KIVA would be the most suited L-ACOUSTICS system to ensure proper and even coverage the 3,500 audience. Besides, the compact size and elegance of this system was particularly suited for such an application which typically requires the most discreet sound system integration. The configuration consisted of 2 LR arrays of 6 KIVA elements and 2 KILO complimentary low frequency extension elements. Each array was driven by 1 x LA4 amplified controller, providing and advanced and precise system drive and protection."

Emre Defne adds: "During the rehearsal days, the sound pressure level was measured at 100db at the FOH position. The coverage stability in the horizontal plane of the system was simply amazing. One could tell the excitement among the sound team of the Bejart ballet to use KIVA for the first time".

They were quite astonished and bluffed to hear what was coming out of a system of this size and format. The sound was clear yet powerful. After the show, the whole team was ranting and raving about the quality of the sound, to the point where Bejart technical team -jokingly- considered taking a few KIVA elements back home after the show…

THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS ON TOUR WITH L-ACOUSTICS
September 2007

In 2006, the American Rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers began an international world tour alternating between Europe, North America, and Oceania, in support of the Grammy Award-winning album Stadium Arcadium, which became the best-selling CD of 2006 with over seven million units sold.
As a continuation of the tour the band returned to Europe this year, taking in shows from late June to late August and making stops at various cities and summer festivals along the way. In July they performed 3 shows in 3 different cities (Paris, London, Copenhagen) in just 24 hours.
As for their previous world tours the sound specification revolved exclusively around L-ACOUSTICS equipment. Adopting a unique approach to the sound design, long time RHCP FOH Engineer Dave Rat founder and President of RAT SOUND SYSTEMS Inc relied on the European V-DOSC Network to provide V-DOSC systems for the majority of their run.

Dave Rat comments:
"In my experience back in 2004 and for this tour, the worldwide availability combined with the extremely well-maintained vendor-to-vendor consistency made V-DOSC the only system capable of doing what I was trying to achieve: worldwide sonic consistency, even when I cannot carry a system. I must say that once again I was impressed by the level of positive cooperation I received and from partner to partner."

Freelance system engineer Thomas Genoud Prachet and Lee Vaught (Dave Rat FOH System Technician) were responsible for coordinating between Dave Rat, local production, European V-DOSC Network Partners, and the local CVEs for all the shows. In order to cover the predominantly stadium audiences the main FOH system consisted of 60 V-DOSC cabinets in a dual AB configuration with close coupled dual 2 x 15 arrays for both the left and right FOH hangs. This system was complemented by V-DOSC outer fills and additional delay lines. The subwoofer system design called for 80 x SB218 in total. Additional front fills consisted of 10 x ARCS and 12 x dV-DOSC.

The Paris show held at the Parc des Princes on July 6 saw one interesting variation of the sound system design:
In addition to the 60 x V-DOSC FOH system, 87 KUDO cabinets were provided by French V-DOSC partner POTAR HURLANT to cover side fills and delays.

CVE and POTAR HURLANT Technical Director Madge Malki comments on the Paris show: "The KUDO system consisted of 2 side hang arrays of 21 KUDO each. We also installed 3 additional delay lines of 15 KUDO each for the LCR arrays behind the mix position. Taking into account the difficulties of covering such a large audience, the long throw capability of KUDO (105 meters in this case) was really impressive. KUDO represents an excellent alternative to V-DOSC for such configurations. Besides, the well-established group of KUDO sound providers allowed us to rent in the necessary additional cabinets required for the show very easily."

L-ACOUSTICS FORGING AHEAD ON THE UK & ROI INSTALLATION MARKETS
September 2007

L-ACOUSTICS have had their best ever year in the UK and Republic of Ireland winning several landmark installation projects such as Southampton Guildhall, the London Barbican Theatre, the University of East Anglia Norwich, Cymru Llandudno Conference Centre, and Winchester Family Church, to name just a few.

Paul Nicholson from L-ACOUSTICS UK explains:
"our success in 2007 was the result of building strong foundations and relationships with consultants, contractors, and installers over the previous years. Combined with this we clearly have the right solutions to offer the market, particularly with the new powered P series and XT coaxial range, not to mention the legendary WST products such as ARCS and dV-DOSC. All our system designs are supported by the unique capability to model projects in our proprietary 3D SOUNDVISION software.

All these factors are validated through the comments of our clients below".

SOUTHAMPTON GUILDHALL, dV-DOSC
Simon Williams Head Technician comments:
"L-ACOUSTICS have a proven track record and systems that any touring engineer would be happy to use. We are extremely pleased with the end results as are all our clients and the system has worked fantastically on all our shows. We now have the ability to set up and de-rig the flown arrays quickly and effortlessly to suit our wide range of events and audience layouts".

"The 108P's are performing miraculously, with very favorable comments from all our visitors. The sound quality of the 108P is excellent with an SPL which belies their physical dimensions, and their size and weight make it much easier to rig on our grids. As a recent convert to L-ACOUSTICS I am delighted with the approach they have to the quality of their products and their second to none customer service".

UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA (UEA) NORWICH, ARCS
Kevin Minns UAE Tech Manager comments:
"The UEA is the busiest venue on the live touring circuit and this has been a great help when choosing a new PA system installation. I have had a chance to listen to pretty much all the PA systems that are available on the market, and of these the L-Acoustics ARCS, V-DOSC and dV-DOSC always sound the sweetest in our venue. The ARCS have enough headroom and punch for any band or club night. I would urge anyone who is thinking of purchasing a system to install to definitely listen to one or more of the L-Acoustics systems before making their decision".

"The 112P's have exceeded my expectations - they sound punchy, fast, and accurate. The 108P's are stunning and you could easily run an entire conference in this very large venue using nothing else. They have an amazing amount of low end from a small box to the point where people were walking up to the SB15P's to see if they were running".

L-ACOUSTICS shakes the International SLAVYANSKI BAZAAR Festival of Arts
September 2007

This year the Slavyanski Bazaar, the largest Festival in Belarus, celebrated its 16th edition, in the newly renovated Summer Amphitheatre of Vitebsk. The Slavyanski Bazaar Festival is renowned for bringing many artists representing different genres and countries in live music and theatre performances, alongside art exhibitions and films shows. The renovation project, supported by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and financed by the Belarusian government, consisted in the addition of a roof to the existing amphitheatre and in the extension of the seating capacity from 5500 to 6250.
The L-ACOUSTICS representative in Belarus, ART RAMOS STUDIO as in previous years supplied the Festival with L-ACOUSTICS equipment, and this year an additional 9 x KUDO™ per side were combined with the existing 9 x V-DOSC®, 6 x dV-DOSC, 6 x ARCS®, and 8 x SB218, to cover the new side fills. All the stage monitors were L-ACOUSTICS 115XTHiQ.

Valery Streltsov, Director, ART RAMOS STUDIO, explains: "Our organization was founded in 1994. Since then we have always kept abreast of the newest developments in technology and have often been the first to introduce them to Belarus. A prime example was the L-ACOUSTICS line source array system that we brought in 2001 especially for the Slavyanski Bazaar. This year, we pushed our collaboration with the Slavyanski Bazaar a little further with the project of extended audience capacity located on side sections.
We first made SOUNDVISION simulations to see how best we could cover these new audience areas. This quickly led us to choose KUDO for its flexibility in various horizontal coverage patterns. As an example, we were able to use different louver settings within each cluster to perfectly match the audience geometry. Well…the actual results with the new system in place are quite impressive and perfectly matching the SOUNDVISION simulations! Coverage, both in terms of SPL and tonal balance is excellent and remarkably even in any sitting area, with this very special L-ACOUSTICS direct field experience for the audience. Everybody here enjoys the quality of the sound equipment and its performance. The feedback from visiting producers and guest sound engineers and producer is simply phenomenal. We are pleased with this new success which follows our recently installed 24 KUDO system in the Sports Palace, the largest concert hall in Belarus.

Gauthier DALLE, Sales Manager, L-ACOUSTICS, adds: "We would like to congratulate the ART RAMOS STUDIO team for bringing this new quality project to such a successful conclusion for the Slavyanski Bazaar. We are also very excited about their future L-ACOUSTICS projects in Belarus."

L-ACOUSTICS INTRODUCES NEW SB28 SUBWOOFER
AND LA8 CONTROLLED AMPLIFIER
September 2007

The new SB28 enclosure is a recommended subwoofer companion for the KUDO, V-DOSC, dV-DOSC, and ARCS systems, lowering the combined system operating range down to 25 Hz. The SB28 contains two 18'' direct radiating LF transducers integrated into a bass-reflex tuned enclosure. The specially designed 18'' transducers provide an exceptional cone excursion capability combined with low thermal compression even at the very highest operating levels. The bass-reflex vents feature a progressive profile allowing for laminar air flow.

The association of the modern components with the new vents delivers a greatly improved +5 dB SPL dynamic range compared to the previous standards. Made of high grade Baltic birch plywood, the cabinet also features industry standard aeroquip rails for column rigging. The control and amplification of the SB28 is exclusively managed by the new LA8 platform. The LA8 amplified controller belongs to the new generation of high-end integrated controllers entirely dedicated to the comprehensive operation of L-ACOUSTICS loudspeaker systems.

The LA8 combines in a 2U lightweight chassis the resources of a 2 x 4 DSP engine driving four channels of amplification delivering up to 1800 W each, a storage capacity of 99 presets, a user-friendly front panel interface for standalone operation. The DSP filtering encompasses advanced crossover functions, system EQ, and L-DRIVE thermal and over-excursion protection of the transducers. The L-ACOUSTICS LA8 amplified controller offers either a ''standard'' SB28 drive mode or a ''cardioid'' mode.
Furthermore, the design of complex and sophisticated control systems is made possible on the LA8 by the integration of an Ethernet-based network capability, which allows for the simultaneous networking of up to 253 LA8 units. The LA NETWORK MANAGER software offers remote control and monitoring of the amplified controllers via a user-friendly and intuitive graphic interface.

The new SB28 and the LA8 amplified controller will be shipping soon.

WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS INAUGURATE
NAGAI STADIUM L-ACOUSTICS SOUND SYSTEM
September 2007

Built originally for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics the Osaka Nagai Stadium was the centrepiece of the city's bid to host the 2007 World Athletic championships. The facility underwent a major renovation program in 1996 to prepare it for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and shortly after the Korea/Japan football tournament a decision was made to upgrade the A/V facilities with a full digital infrastructure including fibre optic distribution throughout the venue, making Nagai Stadium a first of its kind in Japan.

The new project was headed by Consultant Yoshiteru Mimura from ARCHITO Co and covered a complete redesign of the sound system. The goal was to achieve an even audience coverage at a maximum SPL level of 100 dB for all types of program material with maximized voice intelligibility. The L-ACOUSTICS brand was chosen for its ability to deliver such high levels of performance and the sound design was executed using the proprietary L-ACOUSTICS 3D modelling software SOUNDVISION.
A main system installation consisting of two dV-DOSC clusters totalling 28 enclosures and 8 dV-SUBS was located on the main tribune to ensure coverage of the playing field and two thirds of the audience profile. The remaining lower and mid-height sections of the main tribunes were covered with a ring of ARCS clusters totalling some 50 cabinets. The upper-back sections of the tribunes were covered with 19 coaxial MTD enclosures.
The overall system integration was contracted by PANASONIC, and sound company HIBINO handled the actual set-up and tuning of the 105 L-ACOUSTICS cabinets all of which were controlled by Dolby Lake Processors. The equipment and technical support was provided by L-ACOUSTICS Japanese distributor BESTEC AUDIO Inc.

Not only were they involved individually in all avenues of the market but they also supported major international tours including The RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS and GENESIS by way of providing supplementary systems for RAT SOUND and HYPERSON respectively.
After more than 10 years in the field The V-DOSC system is still widely acknowledged as the original and best of all the Line Arrays and is always referred to as the standard audio reference tool. The most respected Engineers and Production Managers continue to use the V-DOSC Network because they know that the system is technically superior and the level of service offered by the partners is quite simply outstanding.

Also, the interaction between companies is seamless, allowing for transparent world wide cross rentals. No one else can even come close to matching this distinction and it gives not only the UK and ROI team a unique operational advantage, but along with the support of the world wide Network of V-DOSC Partners, a highly respected and unique market position".

"I believe this is also a good time to reaffirm the general credentials not only of the UK and ROI companies, but also of the World wide V-DOSC Network Partners and to remind everyone of the unique turnkey approach that each of our official Partners deliver on a daily basis to the pro audio industry. These companies support a common ethos of cooperation sharing a unified approach towards delivering a ground breaking product to the highest possible technical standards.

The world wide success of V-DOSC is comprehensively maintained and supported by all these companies who have embraced and developed both the technical and human criteria that have enabled them to operate at the very highest level. This has meant a considerable investment by them, not just with V-DOSC but also dV-DOSC, ARCS, SUBS, 115XT HiQ, LA Amps, and the other associated turnkey packaging features. Combined with this, their Certified V-DOSC Engineers (CVE's) have all been factory trained regarding the latest software, presets, and rigging, and have an unsurpassed level of experience out in the field".

"I would like to thank all the companies and their staff for their ongoing support as we look forward to even greater success together in the future".

Michael Cohl, tour promoter recently explained: "Genesis is absolutely one of the world's most exciting bands of all time. They have always been an amazing concert experience and I'm thrilled that fans will be able to see them perform again live for the first time in 15 years."

Formed in 1966, Genesis has sold over 130 million albums. The Duke album topped the UK charts in 1980 with the hit single, Turn It On Again. Genesis is one of the very few British bands which have achieved global success and maintained it over years.

Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford are joined on stage by long-time Genesis sidemen, Chester Thompson on drums and Daryl Stuermer on guitar. They will travel through Europe until mid July before heading to North America early September. In the meantime, Rhino Records debuts the first in a series of three box sets spotlighting 13 studio albums by one of the top-selling recording artists of all time.

Swiss-based V-DOSC partner HYPERSON has been appointed to handle sound reinforcement for the tour.
Alain Schneebeli, Director of HYPERSON explains: "This tour managed by Steve Jones brings together a team established on previous collaboration with Phil Collins". Effectively, the sound crew members boast several years of collaboration with Phil Collins, with Alain Schneebeli as monitor Engineer and Michel Colin, front of house mixing engineer. Michel Colin is of course working in close hands with Certified V-DOSC Engineer Manu Gares for sound design and system operation.

Manu and Michel explain the sound system aspects: "Besides the expectations on sound one would have for a tour of this calibre, "The "Turn It On Again" tour scenography has a strong emphasis on video and pyrotechnics. Moreover, the stage was primarily designed for stadia and large format arenas with a total width of 90 meters. Therefore, the sound design is challenging as it requires high throw capability and must be as visually unobstructed as possible with an unusual spacing of 46 meters between the L/R V-DOSC clusters."

In order to cover the stadium audience for almost every show, the main FOH consists of 96 V-DOSC cabinets with 4 clusters LL, L, R, RR of 16 V-DOSC cabinets each. This 64 V-DOSC system is completed by additional V-DOSC outer fills featuring 16 additional V-DOSC cabinets each and additional delay lines. The complimentary subwoofer system design called for 18 SB218 per side completed with two central stacks of 8 SB218 in order to counteract central build-up. Additional front fills are covered with 4 ARCS a side completed by 4 spaced mini stacks of dV-DOSC.

Alain Schneebeli describes the monitor system provided by HYPERSON:
"although the band mostly operates with in-ear monitors, keyboardist Tony Banks uses a pair of reference stage monitor 115 XTHIQ. The drum kit operates with an LF extension consisting of a dV-SUB which is great for impact.

"The production operates a single sound kit, with an average time window of two hours for set-up. Besides its sonic qualities, V-DOSC proves to be a very fast system to rig". HYPERSON also benefit from the local support of the V-DOSC network partners to complete our V-DOSC kit in places we need additional equipment and qualified support. The ability to source identical L-ACOUSTICS system equipment and qualified personnel almost everywhere in the world is an invaluable asset for a touring sound company like ours".

L-ACOUSTICS KUDO AT THE PARIS AIR SHOW
June 2007

The 47th International Paris Air Show - Le Bourget closed on June 24 and set a new record with more than 150,000 trade visitors. "This year's Show benefited from a favourable economic environment, as order announcements have shown, such as the 425 firm orders booked by Airbus or the 35 Ariane 5 launchers ordered by Arianespace from Astrium, to name just a few"
said Louis Le Portz, Commissaire Général of the Show.

But the show clearly remains popular with the general public as 160,000 visitors flocked to Le Bourget airfield during the three days open to the public.
Louis Le Portz expressed his satisfaction that the Paris Air Show "is still a celebration of aerospace, offering members of the public the opportunity to see the latest emblematic models on display and in flight." He concluded by saying that the flying displays seem to have been enjoyed by all.

In order to offer a spectacular view of flying displays to the general public, a special area located parallel to the taxiways had been allocated. Measuring 270 m in width and 78 m in depth for a capacity of 40,000 people, this general public zone featured an additional tribune with a seating capacity of 2500, located before the aircraft hangars. A specific sound reinforcement system for commentators, journalists and guests was provided by GANDOIS to cover this area of the airport..

Pascal Rossat, Project Manager of GANDOIS explains: "GANDOIS is the event production subsidiary of FORCLUM (a division of EIFFAGE Group) and is in charge of handling telecommunication and sound reinforcement at the 47th Paris Air Show. And for more than ten years, our organization has developed a privileged partnership with DSE - a sound company located in Nancy and headed by Serge Weber - for specific aspects of the Paris Air Show sound reinforcement needs.

DSE Serge Weber's comments on the sound design aspects of the general public area: "The goal was to cover the general public area with a sound system which cannot be visually obtrusive and must demonstrate a long-throw capability. The priority was clearly given to the air show flying displays and a traditional placement of the PA system from the front (taxiways and runway/flying display side) was not an option. In order to satisfy the coverage needs - the dimensions of the area represent the size of almost 3 stadia- we ran computer simulations using the SOUNDVISION acoustic software to determine the exact configuration of our KUDO system. This year and for the very first time, we effectively approached the sound design with a Line Source Array as opposed to a traditional distributed system in the previous years.

It was then established that the system should be installed right behind the tribune with a main alignment of 6 Maxi Towers of 6 KUDO elements each and an ancillary cluster of 12 KUDO elements located a little further away in the AIRBUS A380 taxiing area. Each KUDO tower was 10 meter high, with intervals of 31 meters in between towers. The KUDO system louvers were set at 50° for the top boxes aiming at a distance of 75 meters and 110° for the bottom ones for the short throw needs. I must say that with KUDO, the SPL has reached an incredible regularity and that the system intelligibility is amazing. Spectators at both ends of the coverage area enjoyed a clear and precise sound. The feedback on sound quality from the show organization was excellent.

Another noteworthy aspect of using KUDO for this large-scale event is the cross rental platform we benefit from in our region and neighbouring countries. The particular 47th Paris Air Show production required 48 enclosures and our company owns a 12 cabinet kit. The 36 extra enclosures were rented from fellow KUDO providers ADH, CHAMPAGNE AUDIOVISUEL (France) and RIDER (Netherlands). We have established cross rental between our companies and this networking collaboration is of course mutually beneficial for KUDO providers as it allows us to be present on large-scale and demanding productions."

Now that The Paris Air Show audience could enjoy a great air show with a very special sound, the organizers look forward to welcoming all visitors back to Le Bourget in 2009, to celebrate the International Paris Air Show's centenary, the first Show having been held in 1909 at the Grand Palais in Paris.

L-ACOUSTICS dV-DOSC INSTALLED AT SOUTHAMPTON GUILDHALL
April 2007

Southampton Guildhall, one of the busiest music and performance venues in the UK has purchased an L-ACOUSTICS dV-DOSC system. Simon Williams the chief in house technician takes up the story :

"We have been after a new FOH speaker system for almost 10 years now, and due to the limitations with the existing installation we were adamant that if sufficient funds ever became available to meet our requirements then we would only look at a product from a high end manufacturer. We had been offered small sums of capital funding in the past, but nothing that would have given us the upgrade we were looking for, namely a completely new system capable of managing the extremely wide range of shows we have to deal with. In addition we were looking for very accurate coverage of the audience thereby helping to control the very reverberant acoustic environment that the Guildhall offers to amplified sound! So, finding the right FOH system was essential for us".

"When our capital bid was confirmed by LIVE NATION (who have been managing the venue for the past 4 years on behalf of Southampton City Council) it was easy to put our specification together as we had a very clear idea what was required. As well as finding a system which could offer excellent vocal clarity across every seat in the house we also wanted to have enough headroom available to manage bands and discos as well".

"Southampton Guildhall is a very busy venue and over the years we have lost count of the number of L-ACOUSTICS productions that have passed through which was a big help to us in choosing the right system. Apart from wanting to install equipment that would meet our audio requirements, it had to have a proven track record and well established long term support and backup, but would also be a brand that touring engineers would be happy to use. So after demos from different manufacturers we decided that the L-ACOUSTICS solution was the best option in all respects".

"The dV-DOSC system we have gone with was demonstrated to us by Paul Nicholson from L-ACOUSTICS UK, supplied by Glen Smith from GSA, with all the cases, racks, and cabling supplied and installed by local company BCS Audio/ BCS manufacturing. All three companies have been fantastic from start to finish, and we can't thank them enough. We are extremely pleased with the end results as are all our clients and it has worked fantastically on all the shows we have used it on so far. We now have the ability to set up and de-rig the flown arrays quickly and effortlessly to suit our wide range of events and audience layouts. We have even had some productions touring their own systems who have expressed an interest in using the dV-DOSC next time around".

Paul Nicholson from L-ACOUSTICS UK comments :

"My brief was to design a system that was flexible enough to deal with both the audio needs and the acoustical problems presented by the main room whilst allowing for full bandwidth coverage of the venue's variable seating and / or standing audience configurations. With a high and remote fixed balcony and removable rear bleachers, our proprietary 3D Soundvision software certainly came into its own allowing me to determine the different trim heights, inter-element angles, and output gain settings required to cover the different audience geometries. I came up with a flexible set of designs which utilised a total of just 12 x dV-DOSC + 4 x dV-SUBS all powered by LA48a amplifiers. Once these options were discussed and approved the system was demonstrated in the venue and the real world results exactly matched all the Soundvision simulations. The seamless coverage between the dV-DOSC elements with no frequency or SPL deviation in both the horizontal and vertical planes really brought home the advantages of Wavefront Sculpture Technology (WST) to everyone involved in the project".

"It's really pleasing to see another important UK venue decide to install L-ACOUSTICS products for all the right reasons including superior technical results and true cost effectiveness".

PROLIGHT 2007
L-ACOUSTICS Updates XT Coaxial Loudspeaker Range with 8XT and 12XT
March 2007

PROLIGHT - FRANKFURT Stand B32 Hall 8 -- The new 8XT and 12XT from L-ACOUSTICS represent the next generation of single-point-source coaxial loudspeakers. Drawing upon two decades of real world, leading edge experience dating back to the MTD coaxial concept in 1987, the new XT systems deliver the ultimate sonic performance in a compact and versatile multi-tasking package.

Featuring an extremely compact (16.6" H x 9.8" W x 10.6" D) and lightweight (24.2 lbs.) design, the 8XT cabinet is the most compact model of the L-ACOUSTICS coaxial range. Operating on a frequency bandwidth of 65 Hz to 20 kHz, this response can be lowered to 32 Hz with the addition of the SB118 subwoofer.

The 8XT contains a 1.5-inch-diaphragm compression driver coaxially loaded by an eight-inch low-frequency transducer in a bass-reflex tune enclosure. The internal passive crossover network uses proprietary third-order filters with built-in phase compensation. The linearization and protection of the transducers is defined by the drive parameters contained in the LA4 amplified controller.

Housed in a slightly larger enclosure (21.3" H x 16.1" W x 15.3" D; 63.8 lbs.), the 12XT combined active/passive cabinet is the mid-sized model of the L-ACOUSTICS coaxial range. It features an operating frequency bandwidth of 55 Hz to 20 kHz and, like the 8XT, this response can be lowered to 32 Hz via the use of the SB118 subwoofer.
8XT

12XT

The 12XT contains a three-inch diaphragm compression driver coaxially loaded onto a 12-inch low-frequency transducer in a bass-reflex tuned enclosure. Managed by the LA4 controlled amplifier, the active filtering encompasses advanced crossover functions, system EQ, HF and LF transducer time-alignment, and dual (real time and RMS) protection of the transducers. In passive mode, the 12XT onboard crossover network uses proprietary fourth-order filters with built-in phase compensators, and the linearization and protection of the transducers is defined by the drive parameters contained in the LA4 amplified controller.

The coaxial transducer arrangement of the 8XT and 12XT produces an axi-symmetric directivity output (90 degrees and 100 degrees, respectively) along with a smooth tonal response free of any acoustic conflicts over the entire frequency range.

The wedge-shaped cabinet design of the two XT models makes them perfectly suited to all multipurpose sound reinforcement applications in addition to short or long throw monitoring use via two fixed angle settings of 30 and 40 degrees (with regard to vertical). Made of high grade Baltic birch plywood, the cabinets also feature a pole mount socket and a predrilled template for third party Omnimount fixtures. L-ACOUSTICS brackets are also available for flown applications.

Due to their flexible design criteria, the XT coaxial loudspeakers meet the highest demands from both the fixed installation and rental production markets allowing them to be used for front-of-house, fill, or monitor applications.

The main advantages of coaxial technology include single point-source radiation combined with excellent phase response, total wavefront coherency at all frequencies, and axi-symmetrical directivity, which produces identical coverage patterns in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The coaxial design also provides LF/HF superimposed dispersion characteristics that are free from polar lobing effects, which are destructive in traditional horn and woofer combinations. The end result is natural studio monitor sound quality, which is ideal for both proximity monitoring use or perfectly matched for semi-reverberant environments.

The XT coaxial range features the latest generation of transducers and cutting-edge electro-acoustics engineering design. The end result is an outstanding sonic performance with an aural sensation of natural and transparent sound even at the highest listening levels. Setting up XT enclosures is quick and easy due to the unique integrated flying hardware system, which ensures precision, safety, and full compatibility with current rigging safety standards.

Its compact and wedge-shaped format makes the XT range equally suited to various sound reinforcement applications, such as front-of-house, floor monitor and distributed systems.

The XT range - including both the new 8XT and 12XT in addition to the pre-existing 115XT HiQ active reference floor monitor - has been designed for use with the LA4 amplified controller. Equipped with a wide range of presets across the entire XT range, the LA4 provides the sound engineer with total creative freedom for any conceivable application in theatre, club, concert hall, broadcast and multipurpose facility applications.
LA4

In addition to delivering highly pristine and powerful sound, the LA4 amplified controller offers a unique dual transducer protection system, a precise system drive engine, and remote EQ and tonal balancing features. A single LA4 can power and control four active enclosures, such as the 12XT or 115XT HiQ, or up to eight passive enclosures, namely the 8XT or 12XT in its passively configured mode. For more demanding low-end reinforcement, the SB118 subwoofer can be deployed as part of a three-way system.

As an added advantage for the sound designer, any XT configuration can be acoustically and mechanically modeled with L-ACOUSTICS' proprietary SOUNDVISION 3D simulation software. Simple or complex designs can be achieved quickly and intuitively using SOUNDVISION and then transferred into real world situations closely match the computer simulations. The XT software predictions are modeled on the preset parameters of the LA4 amplified controller.

Furthermore, the design of complex and sophisticated control systems is made possible on the LA4 by the integration of an Ethernet-based network capability, which allows for the simultaneous networking of up to 255 LA4 units. The LA NETWORK MANAGER software offers remote control and monitoring of the amplified controllers via a user-friendly and intuitive graphic interface.

The new 8XT and 12XT coaxial system, as well as the LA4 amplified controller, will be available in May.

L-ACOUSTICS Launches Ultra-compact KIVA System at PROLIGHT 2007
March 2007

FRANKFURT- PROLIGHT EXPO Booth B32 Hall 8 - The L-ACOUSTICS KIVA system establishes a new reference in Line Source Array technology. Packaged in a sleek, fully integrated, ultra-compact design, KIVA is designed to meet the highest demands of audio professionals and deliver the ultimate performance level in its category. KIVA also fulfills the five WST® (Wavefront Sculpture Technology) criteria in line with the scientific concepts introduced by L-ACOUSTICS in 1992 and shared by the benchmark WST lineage of V-DOSC®, dV-DOSC, and KUDO™.

The L-ACOUSTICS KIVA system is highly appropriate for both the fixed installation and rental production markets. The main system components consist of the following:

KIVA full range element operating from 80 Hz to 20 kHz bandwidth
KILO complimentary low frequency extension element operating from 50 Hz to 100 Hz bandwidth
LA4 amplified controller

KIVA delivers a considerable number of improvements over the traditional sound reinforcement approach particularly with regard to the intelligibility and overall clarity of vocal material. Utilizing WST technology, KIVA allows for even coverage of extremely large acoustic environments where the number of elements (height of the array) constitutes the main factor in establishing the system throw, coverage pattern, and directivity control parameters.

The V-shaped coplanar transducer configuration of KIVA generates a fixed horizontal directivity of 100 degrees with symmetric pattern control across the projection axis, without any conflicts over the entire frequency range. The combination of coplanar symmetry and the DOSC waveguide in the HF region allows the system to fulfill the five WST criteria, thereby allowing the wavefront of a KIVA line source to be curved from 0 to 15 degrees for each element without breaking the inter-element acoustic coupling. The end result is pristine clarity, even coverage, precise directivity, and a unique near field proximity effect that delivers an incomparable listening experience to the audience.

Packaged in an exceptionally lightweight and compact enclosure that sports a virtually invisible captive rigging system, KIVA combines extremely quick set up and system integration with significant savings on storage and handling logistics. Due to its compact size (20.5" W x 6.9"/4" H/h x 14.1" D) and low weight (28.6 lbs.), KIVA easily complies with stringent rigging limitations in theatres, performing art centers, concert halls, convention centers, sport facilities, and TV/broadcast studios, with the added bonus of being highly visually discrete.

KILO & KIVA

KIVA features two 6.5-inch drivers in a bass-reflex tuned enclosure and a HF 1.5-inch diaphragm compression driver coupled to a DOSC waveguide for HF reproduction. The passive crossover network uses second-order filters with built-in phase compensation.

The KIVA cabinet is made from a unique composite material with remarkable mechanical and acoustic properties very similar to Baltic birch plywood but with the added benefit of a high immunity to moisture.

KILO is the low frequency extension enclosure of the KIVA line source array system. Similarly featuring a modest size (20.5" W x 13.9"/11" H/h x 14.1" D) and weight (41.8 lbs.), the cabinet is equipped with a single 12-inch neodymium driver in a tuned dual-chamber bass-reflex enclosure.

The KILO enclosure generates an omni-directional coverage pattern. The addition of KILO elements within the line source array progressively polarizes coverage towards the front of the system as more elements are added, thereby increasing the directivity of the line both horizontally and vertically due to natural dipole effects.

A three-point rigging system is totally captive and integrated into both the KIVA and KILO cabinets. Engineered and die-cast in high-grade steel, it allows up to 20 KIVA elements or 12 KIVA and four KILO to be flown in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

The KIVA and KILO enclosures are controlled and amplified by the dedicated L-ACOUSTICS LA4 controller, which delivers an extremely advanced and precise system drive.

A dedicated preset library exclusively designed for the LA4 platform optimizes system performance. A wide range of system configurations are available for the sound designer and system engineer allowing for a high level of creative freedom. Additional features include an intelligent two-way (real time and RMS) transducer protection circuit and a unique contour EQ interface allowing instant contouring of the line source array.

A single LA4 can drive up to eight KIVA cabinets in a full range preset configuration for vocals and light music material. Alternatively, an LA4 can drive six KIVA and two KILO for medium music applications, while for more demanding low-end reinforcement the SB118 subwoofer can be deployed as part of a three-way system.

KIVA configurations can be acoustically and mechanically modeled with the proprietary L-ACOUSTICS SOUNDVISION 3D simulation software. The KIVA software predictions realized in SOUNDVISION are modeled on the preset parameters of the LA4 amplified controller.

In addition to the above, L-ACOUSTICS' NETWORK MANAGER software offers remote control and monitoring of the amplified controllers via a user-friendly and intuitive graphic interface. The design of complex and sophisticated systems is made possible by the integration of an Ethernet-based network capability, which allows for the simultaneous networking of up to 255 LA4 units.

The KIVA, KILO enclosures and LA4 will be available in May.

L-ACOUSTICS and CAMCO announce joint venture agreement
for New LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers.
March 2007

Sound system manufacturer L-ACOUSTICS announces the release of its new integrated amplifier and DSP platform based on two very similar models. Both the LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers offer cutting-edge loudspeaker amplification, DSP, network control, and comprehensive loudspeaker system protection in a single ergonomic package.

L-ACOUSTICS has brought these products to the market through a joint-venture agreement with German power amplifier manufacturer CAMCO, and both companies have been actively collaborating on the development of the new amplified controllers, which are exclusively manufactured for L-ACOUSTICS by Wenden-based CAMCO.

Christian Heil, CEO of L-ACOUSTICS, explains: "The joint venture with CAMCO on the LA4 and LA8 is the outcome of years of thinking on the future specifications and features of our system approach. We have chosen CAMCO as our partner for the LA4 and LA8 project as we believe they were the best candidates to combine high performance amplification and networking technologies. The DSP engine we jointly developed offers exclusive features, such as dual IIR/FIR algorithms, L-DRIVE protection system and EQ contour interface. The bottom line for our clients is a turnkey approach, which allows them to get more performance out of their L-ACOUSTICS sound systems with a high level of protection and simplified ergonomics. We are excited about this collaboration with CAMCO who have our highest respect for their expertise, quality and reliability."

According to Reiner Sassmann, CEO of CAMCO, "This collaboration is truly exiting for CAMCO. The adoption of CAMCO's amplifier technology, network and DSP platform by a leading speaker manufacturer is proof that speaker management systems in an all-in-one format are the future direction. CAMCO is delighted to have had the opportunity to work so closely with L-ACOUSTICS on this project."

By keeping the LA4 and LA8 specific to the needs of both the current and newly-released L-ACOUSTICS product lines, this integrated system approach will deliver significant and exclusive benefits to the expanding worldwide customer base of L-ACOUSTICS, the creator of modern Line Source Array technology.
